DANCERS AND MUSICIANS TAKE OVER CRESCENT BALLROOM FOR A WILD NIGHT OF NEW LOCAL PERFORMANCE
Two local artists take over Crescent Ballroom to premier new work.
Phoenix, Ariz., 16 October 2015 — Choreographer Jessica Rajko and musician Robin Vining are joining together to host a night of new work premiers and local music at Crescent Ballroom Thursday, November 12th. “Both of us have a long history of participating in dance and music collaborations, but this is the first time that we’ve worked together,” Says Rajko. “We are excited that Crescent Ballroom is taking a chance on such a unique collaboration. I’ve made several site specific works before, but this is the first time I’ve made a dance specifically for a bar or music venue."
Rajko and dancers will be premiering evening-length dance work “I’m Not as Think as You Drunk I Am.” Wild, raw and steeped with dark humor, this work moves beyond the ‘big house party’ portrayal of young adult drinking to share the more intimate and ever-evolving relationships young adults have with alcohol.
“We’ve created this piece specifically for Crescent Ballroom with our Phoenix community in mind,” Rajko says, “Rather than putting the dance on the stage, we are partnering with Crescent Ballroom to take it into the heart of our local community.” The piece weaves together the personal narratives of all six dance artists involved, including Jessica Rajko, Felix Cruz, Jordan Daniels, Sydney Jackson, Elisa Radcliffe and Juan Rodriguez.
Sweetbleeders, the Phoenix-area band led by songwriter Robin Vining will be releasing their latest record, “We Were Never Here.” This album journeys through various styles, as the band is known to do, with exotic instrumentals, wistful folk pop, mixing elements of early rock, soul, vaudeville and barbershop into something all their own.
“We Were Never Here” is the fourth studio album from the group, which also includes David Marquez, Steve Dueck, Brendan Dueck, and Aaron Burke. A diverse set of tunes, it’s a collection of songs the band started recording at 513 Studios in the Spring of 2011, including some material that Vining and company has been playing live since around 1999.
“For me this record is like a love letter to all my dear friends, here and departed...and sort of like a mail bomb too,” says Vining, “I just feel lucky to be able to work and play with the many kind and gifted folks who helped us make this record.”
The event will also include performances by local band Treasure Mammal and DJ Fabiulous. The show is begins at 8:00pm, Thursday, November 12th. Tickets are $7 in advance and $12 at the door and can be purchased online at https://www.ticketfly.com/purchase/event/962371
